Semester 01 Audio Diary Case Studies
Introduction
According to the authors of 'Journeys in and Through Sound', sound portraits provide a way for us to be able to experience and feel the emotions of someone's emotions and emotional journey through the experience of their voice. By collecting sounds from relevant news sources, Battle for Truth, the liberation arts project, made sound portraits with the South Sudanese Youths in Australia. To enhance the recording, sound effects were used in the final composition in order to make people aware of the urgency of the situation.
The piece illustrates how African Australians are misrepresented in the media through the use of a variety of voices from interviews with African Australian women and audio samples from "Breaking News" produced by New Change.

misrepresentation and vilification of young
African Australians and the ongoing
sensationalism of the so-called Apex gang
following the Moomba festival in 2016. This
portrait weaves together a range of voices —
the young women themselves from a series of
life-story interviews, snippets drawn from
15 hours of media coverage that includes
journalists, politicians and police and
finally short poetic interruptions from the
audio portion of the film clip
counter-story “Breaking News” created by
New Change.”

Features of the application include:
