Semester 01 Exhibition Case Studies
Introduction
Uncovering the Art of Everyday Gestures Peel Here is an interactive exhibition about peeling held at NAFA Campus 1, Lim Hak Tai Gallery from 11 October 2022 to 30 October 2022.
As a result of the explorations conducted by Atelier HOKO and six design researchers who have graduated from NAFA's School of Art & Design, the exhibition presents 17 results. The exhibition appealed to me as the purpose of all installations is to use peeling as a metaphor for removing barriers that hinder access to content. Peeling is a process of separating, unsealing, or revealing what lies beneath.
Augmented Reality (AR) by The Doodle
People
The Doodle People, a Singapore-based creative
tech studio that created AR installations for
the exhibition, placed them on the NAFA campus
for the audience to experience through their
mobile devices as an extension of the
exhibition. Audiences can reveal hidden artworks
and digital enhancements to their surroundings
by peeling away surfaces on their screens.
Peeling in everyday life
There were several installations that were interesting. The first installation I saw was a showcase of the various lid covers. I was intrigued because I never realised what the different covers were called. A display was provided of a variety of everyday products that require peeling to operate.
Among the installations I appreciated most was the one that demonstrated the peeling process. The actual product was used to illustrate each step except for the banana. It is also interesting that Peel Here used videos of various shooting styles, including stop motion and pantomime acts of hand gestures when peeling an object.
Action of peeling
The interactive exhibits were very engaging because you could peel something off in a variety of ways. It never gets boring or monotonous.
I found my favourite installation to be the one that encouraged visitors to stamp a series of instructions on how to peel various objects. The instructions were very detailed and a lot of thought had been put into them.
